Common Security and Defence Policy

Today, foreign affairs ministers and defence ministers discussed the implementation of the EU Global Strategy in the area of security and defence. The Council then adopted conclusions which highlight the significant progress in strengthening cooperation in the area of security and defence and provide further guidance on next steps. 

Permanent structured cooperation (PESCO)

At a meeting of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Luxembourg on Monday, Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu underscored that the EU's progress in the field of security and defence should contribute to strengthening European defense and intensify co-operation with NATO.

The joint celebration of the Centennial of Romania's Greater Union and the Independence Centennial of Poland offer the two states cooperation opportunities for emphasizing their modern history's reference moments, added to the Romania-Poland strategic partnership, the Romanian ambassador to Poland, Ovidiu Dranga, told AGERPRES in an interview.

AGERPRES special correspondent Florentina Peia reports: President Klaus Iohannis stated on Friday that there is a need of unity and coherence in order to adopt the defence and deterrence measures on the entire Eastern Flank.

On 7 June 2018, the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) co-organised the conference "Military Mobility - Key to European Security" in Brussels.

The Council today adopted a general approach on the proposed rules for safeguarding competition in air transport. The proposal aims to ensure fair competition between EU and foreign air carriers operating in the EU. At the same time it seeks to maintain conditions conducive to a high level of connectivity throughout the EU.

Sofia hosts a two-day informal meeting of the defense ministers of the EU member states. The forum is part of the official calendar of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU Council and its host is Defense Minister Krasimir Karakachanov.

Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu on Monday attended a working lunch with the ambassadors of EU member states accredited in Bucharest, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Romania amidst the ongoing Bulgarian presidency of the EU Council, discussing, among other things, the importance of the post-Brexit European summit to be hosted by the city of Sibiu.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov participated in the discussion "Protecting together the security of the West, the defense alliance and its impact on the transatlantic relations", moderated by the chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber.

The discussion is part of the events at the Munich Security Conference, the government's press service said.

Today begins the second day of the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Sofia. It also includes ministers of the candidate countries - Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey and Montenegro.

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini will also participate. The forum will discuss the Security and Defense topics.
