TThe date for the election of the new president of the Constitutional Court has been designated as March 21, as the term of office of current head Zühtü Arslan is set to conclude on April 20.

The Constitutional Court has dismissed a request from MPs representing "Vazrazhdane" and "There Is Such a People" political parties to challenge the decision of the 49th National Assembly regarding a proposed national referendum on the status of the Bulgarian lev.

With a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court entering into force on Jan. 28, married women are now able to use their maiden surname without resorting to court proceedings.

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç has proposed the necessity of drafting a new constitution in the wake of a deepening disagreement between the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court over the imprisonment of MP Can Atalay.

The minister's proposition aligns with the long-standing efforts of the government.

An ex-convict who sued the prison administration where they had served their sentence, citing overcrowded wards and lack of hygiene, has been entitled to compensation of 78,000 Turkish Liras in a precedent-setting verdict by the Constitutional Court.

Fatih Seyis, the ex-convict who was imprisoned in Düzce Closed Penal Institution for a crime he committed, was released in 2019.

I feel no moral guilt towards anyone. This was stated by Kiril Petkov, answering a question whether he would apologize to the Bulgarian people for violating the Constitution.

Petkov told bTV that he accepted the Constitutional Court's ruling on his case and promised to pay the fine.

"The decision of the Constitutional Court means exactly that - that for the period from May to September, despite the fact that he exercised this state function, Kiril Petkov was not Minister of Economy," lawyer Valya Gigova told BNR.

"The decision of the Constitutional Court is a fact and there is no sense in commenting on it.

The May 10th decree by which President Rumen Radev appointed Kiril Petkov as economy minister in the first caretaker government is unconstitutional.

This was ruled by the Constitutional Court with 11 votes, as Georgi Angelov signed the decision with a special opinion on the admissibility. The court is expected to announce its motives later in the day.

The National Assembly may not suspend the implementation of powers of other branches of government, the Constitutional Court said on Tuesday. The judgment was rendered in connection with a moratorium imposed by the 45th National Assembly on the work of the then outgoing government of prime minister Boyko Borissov.

After three sessions, the Constitutional Court in Tirana has suspended the legal initiatives that paved the way for construction of a new National Theatre undertaken by the government and the Municipality of Tirana until the court issues a final decision on the issue.

The old National Theatre was demolished in May 2020, after three years of protests by activists.
