Greek consumer prices rise in January, led by transport, housing costs

Greece's annual EU-harmonized inflation rate picked up in January, statistics service data showed on Wednesday, with the reading coming in above market expectations, hitting almost a five-year high.

The reading in January was 1.5 percent from 0.3 percent in December. Consumer prices were led higher by transport, housing, telecoms, alcoholic beverages and tobacco costs.

Greece's consumer price index flat in December

Greece's annual headline consumer price index was unchanged at zero percent in December year-on-year, with the annual pace of deflation slowing sharply from -0.9 percent in November, statistics service data showed on Wednesday.

The data also showed the European Union-harmonized inflation rate turned positive in December at 0.3 percent from -0.2 percent in November.

Greek consumer prices deflate in November, led by durables, apparel

Greece's annual EU-harmonised inflation rate turned negative in November after a positive reading in the previous month, statistics service data showed on Friday.

The reading in November was -0.2 percent from 0.6 percent in October. Consumer prices were led lower by durable goods, apparel and footwear.

Turkey 'set to cut share of food in inflation basket to ease consumer prices'

The share of food prices in the inflation basket will be decreased from 24 to 20 percent by the end of the year to ease consumer price increases, Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci has said, daily Habertürk reported Oct. 17. 

The government recently restructured its food committee in line with its fight against stubbornly rising food prices, which have pushed up the inflation rate. 

Deflation persists for a 42nd month

Greece's headline consumer price index fell 0.9 percent year-on-year in August, with the annual pace of deflation picking up from -1.0 percent in July, statistics service data showed on Friday.

This was the 42nd consecutive month of CPI decline. Consumer prices were led higher by alcoholic beverages, tobacco, durable goods, transportation, hotels and restaurants.

The course of events in the direction of double-digit inflation

While the average January increases in consumer prices is around 1 percent, the increase this January reached 1.82 percent, which was quite a surprise. When the monthly rate reached 1.82 percent, then the annual inflation, which stood at 8.81 percent in December 2015, jumped to 9.58 percent at the end of January.

Bulgaria Reports 0.1% Monthly Deflation for November

Bulgaria on Monday reported negative monthly consumer price inflation of -0.1% for November.

The inflation rate for the first 11 months of 2015 was negative at -0.4%, the statistics office NSI said in a monthly inflation report.

Annual inflation (November 2015 vs November 2014) was also negative, measuring minus 0.4%.
