DT invests in local app maker

Discussions between Deutsche Telekom and Greek technology company Desquared lasted more than a year, but now 20% of the latter has come under the control of the German telecommunications group. Kathimerini understands the purchase price of 20% of Desquared, which has a valuation of more than 20 million euros, was set at €5 million.

Kotsovolos suitors are increasing

Electrical goods retailer Kotsovolos is up for sale by British group Currys and is seeing the number of potential suitors growing by the week.

Interested parties should express their interest by early August, so they can gain more information on the British-owned chain in late September. Currys is said to be hoping for a conclusion by the end of the year.

MakTel once dominated the mobile market in North Macedonia, operating since 2001 as a joint venture between the state and Magyar Telekom, the Hungarian subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. Its only competitor was the far smaller Cosmote network.

Culture ministry expands Cosmote deal for free WiFi in more sites, museums

Greece's Culture Ministry on Monday signed an agreement with Cosmote, the mobile phone unit of the country's largest telecom company OTE, to expand free WiF access to the visitors of the most prominent archaeological sites and museums around the country.

The program started several years ago but the new deal extends broadband coverage to 25 sites and museums, from the current 14.

Telecom companies sign contracts for launch of 5G network

Greece's telecoms watchdog, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT), on Wednesday signed contracts with the country's three major telecoms providers Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind for the use of the 700MHz, 2GHz, 3400-3800 MHz and 26 GHz radio frequency band widths, which pave the way for a 5G network.

OTE launches its 5G services

OTE said on Thursday it had launched its 5G services in Athens and other big cities. The group, which is 46% owned and managed by Deutsche Telekom, said that its mobile business, Cosmote, was the first to provide its subscribers with 5G offerings in Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities at speeds exceeding 1 gigabit per second.
