Stormy cold front to slide through Greece on weekend

Temperatures will plummet from Saturday along the northern and mountainous regions of the country, the National Meteorological Service (EMY) has said.

The weekend cold front will be accompanied by stormy northerly gales in the Aegean, reaching force eight or nine, with significant rainfall expected along coastal areas.

TUI: Crete, Rhodes and Kos biggest favorites for German tourists

TUI tourism group's head of communications, Aage Dunhaupt, has told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that Crete, Rhodes and Kos remain top destinations for the German customers of the company, which this year is starting the summer season in Greece earlier than in any other year.

Aegean Air at all-time high

Aegean Airlines offered the biggest number of seats in a year ever in 2023, also setting a new passenger record, while occupancy also improved from 2022.

Last year, the airline offered 20% more seats, which amounted to 18.5 million, i.e. 800,000 more than in 2019. It carried 15.5 million passengers, a number that is 26% higher than in 2022.

Record number of German tourists to visit Greece this summer, TUI official says

TUI tourism group's head of communications, Aage Dunhaupt, has said he expects Greece to be visited by a record number of tourists from Germany in 2024, adding that the islands of Crete, Rhodes, and Kos remain the top destinations for the company's customers.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's brief visit to Crete highlighted the increasingly valuable role Greece plays in its wider region, as it is rightly viewed as a credible member of NATO and the European Union and a pillar of stability in a geopolitically critical, but volatile, area.

Wintry weather coming in many parts of Greece

A double cold spell is just around the corner, with storms, snowfall, gusty winds and a drop in temperature across most of the country, according to the national weather service, EMY.

In particular, the first wave is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, while the second will make its appearance on Friday and Saturday and is expected to be more severe.

Blinken may meet Mitsotakis in Hania, spokesman says

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken may meet with Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Hania, Crete, in the coming days, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Thursday. 

The news of Blinken's possible short trip to Greece was announced on Wednesday, but the visit has not been officially confirmed by the US yet.
