Plummeting temperatures and snow forecast for Wednesday
Authorities on the islands of Lesvos and Zakynthos declared a state of emergency on Tuesday following the devastation of property and infrastructure wrought by heavy rain and hailstorms over the last few days, as bad weather continued across the country.

42 refugees rescued off coast of Crete (photo)
42 refugees and migrants were rescued off the coast of the town of Ierapetra in Crete, Thursday at midnight. The refugees were stranded in a boat 35km to the north of Ierapetra, located on the northeast side of the island of Crete and the Greek coast managed to save them after an 8-hour operation and bring them to safety.

A giant silver-cheeked toadfish over half a meter in length was caught on Sunday in the port of Heraklion, Crete, according to local sources.
Tempest stuns western Crete
Flights were canceled and trees uprooted on Monday in western Crete after it was hit by a violent storm that caused torrential rain and floods in the wider region of Hania, including the villages of Askifou, Sfakia and Falasarna and the Samaria Gorge.

Greek police net international migrant-smuggling gang
The Greek Police on Monday said it has dismantled an international criminal organization that helped smuggle undocumented migrants from Turkey into Central and Northern Europe via Iraklio's Nikos Kazantzakis Airport on the island of Crete.
Woman arrested over illegal weapons hoard on Crete
A woman was arrested in Rethymno on the island of Crete on Sunday for the illegal posession of guns and ammunition.
In a raid of the 52-year-old suspect's farm in the Milopotamos region, police said they found two pistols, 2,426 cartridges of various sizes, a sword and hunting rifles.
She was to appear before a local prosecutor.

Student falls from second floor of Crete academy
An 18-year-old student at the Merchant Marine Academy of Crete was in critical condition on Tuesday after plunging from the building's second floor.
It was not clear why or how the incident occurred, and a probe has been launched.
The student from Athens was attending engineering courses at the academy in the area of Souda.
