Croatia–Slovenia border disputes

Ljubljana – The Slovenian Foreign Ministry summoned on Monday the Iranian ambassador to Slovenia over Prime Minister Janez Janša’s recent statement about a 1988 massacre in Iran, explaining that Slovenia always advocates human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Ljubljana – Slovenian voters have overwhelmingly rejected the new waters act in a referendum on Sunday. More than 86% voted against, show near-final unofficial results. The statutory requirement that at least 20% of all voters must be against for a law to be rejected has been satisfied as well.

Ohrid – President Borut Pahor made a case for the EU’s rapid enlargement to Western Balkans as he addressed the Prespa Forum Dialogue on Friday, arguing that this was in the interest of the EU and would strengthen the bloc as well as the region.

The president said continued enlargement was instrumental to the stability and prosperity of Western Balkans.

Ljubljana – Congratulations to Slovenia are pouring in on Friday as the country is marking Statehood Day and the 30th anniversary of its independence. Congratulations to President Borut Pahor were sent today by the leaders of Italy, Austria, Croatia Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia, Japan, Belgium and Switzerland, the president’s office said.

Ljubljana – First Vice-President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has spoken to the STA ahead of her visit to Slovenia, saying that the country could push forward the EU priorities over the next six months as it assumes the EU Council presidency. She also discussed the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Brussels – The Slovenian EU presidency will lead dialogue based on the European Commission’s second annual rule of law report, which will be released at the start of Slovenia’s six-month stint. The polemics over tying EU funds to respect for the rule of law will continue and it is not yet clear what will happen with proceedings against Poland and Hungary.

Brussels – President Borut Pahor has expressed the expectation that the government will have secured stable financing of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) and resolved the appointment of European delegated prosecutors by the start of the country’s EU presidency.

Brussels – Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova announced on World Press Freedom Day a visit to Slovenia to “test the waters” and start a dialogue on an initiative promoting security of journalists. She also also hopes to meet Prime Minister Janez Janša.

Brussels – European Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson will start a two-day visit to Slovenia on Thursday to discuss the country’s EU presidency preparations. She intends to raise the issue of media freedom and pluralism as well. Slovenia should not underestimate the risk to its international reputation when it comes to this, Johansson has told the STA.

Slovenia's President, Borut Pahor, on Monday, denied calling for the dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, saying he wanted Bosnia to join the European Union as soon as possible.
