Coast Guard captures more than 21,000 irregular migrants this year

The Turkish Coast Guard has caught more than 21,400 irregular migrants in Turkey's seas between January and Dec. 6.

In the whole of last year, the Coast Guard intercepted nearly 14,000 people in 594 incidents of irregular migration.

From the start of this year until early December, 768 such incidents occurred, the Coast Guard said.

Official warns against internet ‘addiction’

 

Turks are spending nearly eight hours on the internet that is more than the world average, Ali Taha Koç, head of the Turkish Presidency's Digital Transformation Office, has said.

"Data from We are Social for the first quarter of this year showed our addiction to the internet. According to data, Turks spend seven hours and 57 minutes on the internet," he noted.

China, US to ease restrictions on each other’s media workers

China and the U.S. have agreed to ease restrictions on each other's media workers amid a slight relaxation of tensions between the two sides.

The official China Daily newspaper on Wednesday said the agreement was reached ahead of Nov. 16's virtual summit between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden.

Turkey rescues dozens of asylum seekers pushed back by Greece

Turkish coast guard units rescued dozens of asylum seekers pushed back by Greek forces late on Nov. 15. 

A total of 45 asylum seekers were rescued from a rubber boat off the coast of Ayvalık district in Turkey's northwestern province of Balıkesir, the Turkish Coast Guard said in a statement.

One person was also arrested for alleged human smuggling, the statement said.

More than 160 irregular migrants held in eastern Turkey

Turkish forces on Nov. 1 held some 164 irregular migrants in provinces in the country's east, along with rescuing 101 asylum seekers from sea after an illegal pushback by Greece, security sources said.

Gendarmerie forces in the Ardahan province stopped three vehicles at a checkpoint and caught 27 irregular migrants as well as three drivers suspected of human trafficking.

The US Considers Inclusion of Four Countries, Including Bulgaria, in the Visa-Free Travel Program

US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said the United States was considering adding four countries to its visa-free travel program for up to 90 days, Reuters reported.

Surfing the net, more than half run into fake news

Ljubljana – Almost 90% of Slovenians aged 16-74 used the internet regularly in the first quarter of 2021, show data released by the Statistics Office on Thursday. When surfing the net, some 58% of them (912,340 users) encountered fake or dubious information on social media or news portals and 37% of them went on to check the facts.
