Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Monday that the long-established federal formula is the only way forward in Cyprus reunification talks.

"Ending Turkish occupation and finding a viable solution are a fundamental Greek foreign policy priority," Mitsotakis said after a meeting with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia.

A solution for the Cyprus dispute based on a federation system is not realistic for the island anymore, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said, reiterating their will for a two-state solution.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab called for flexibility ahead of a fresh bid by the United Nations to heal the decades-old division of Cyprus, a dispute harming ties between Turkey and Greece and energy projects in the eastern Mediterranean.

Ahead of the informal five-party conference on the Cyprus issue early next month, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed Tuesday that the most important issue is the way in which the island's natural resources are shared, unveiling Ankara's ultimate goals in the region.

Reunifying ethnically divided Cyprus in line with the long-established formula of federation is off the table in any future peace talks and any deal should be negotiated between two equal sovereign states, Turkey's foreign minister said Tuesday.

Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots will pursue a two-state solution on Cyprus and will seek if there is an opportunity in this bid during a new initiative by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said.

Eminent Turkish academic Kemal Kirisci has worked persistently for peaceful collaboration and friendship between Greece and Turkey.

Turkey and Turkish Cyprus will seek to coordinate their positions concerning the future steps to be taken for resolving the Cyprus problem before 5+1 format talks as Ankara urged the United Nations to stop relying on "a tested and exhausted process" that has failed to resolve the Cyprus dispute for "more than 50 years."

Ersin Tatar, president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), received the U.N. envoy to the island on Jan. 11. 

After talks with Jane Hall Lute at the Presidential Palace in the capital Lefkoşa, Tatar expressed satisfaction with the meeting and looked to define any future negotiations over the divided island's future.
