His Holiness Pope Francis welcomed the Bulgarian people two days before his visit to Bulgaria. The Holy Father commemorates the great work of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, and emphasizes on the forthcoming meeting with His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch Neofit.

Free prophylactic medical examinations for socially disadvantaged people will be held in the tent of the social kitchen  in the courtyard of Sofia's St. Cyril and Methodius Church.

From 11 o'clock today doctors from several hospitals in Sofia will carry out prophylactic examinations free of charge for people in need.

Within three years the building of the National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius "will be completely renewed. This was announced by the Minister of Culture, Boil Banov, after the commemoration of the anniversary of the oldest cultural institute in the post-liberation Bulgaria. Today, the National Library marks the 140th anniversary of its creation.
 

Against a background of fears that Latin letters are taking over, Serbia's Ministry of Culture has proposed toughening the law on the use of the Cyrillic script, creating a Council for the Serbian Language - and imposing fines for those who do not respect Serbia's "mother script".

Worried by the declining use of their ancient script, councillors in the Serbian capital, Belgrade on Friday adopted a decision to reward companies that promote use of Cyrillic.

The adopted by-law offers a 5-per-cent discount to companies and people who rent city-owned offices if they write their names in Cyrillic.

Pro-Serbian opposition party Prava Crna Gora (The Real Montenegro) has sent an open letter to the Education Ministry demanding the 'protection' of the Cyrillic script and alleging discrimination in the public education system.

Cyrillic is an ancient script dating back more than 1,000 years with the earliest form of the alphabet emerging in Bulgaria in the 9th Century.

But some Bulgarians have found their Twitter accounts suspended and tweets hidden because they are thought to be the work of Russian bots, as Russian also uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

A monument of Cyril and Methodius will be opened on May 24 in Balchik, according to BGNews. Today's celebration of Bulgarian culture and Slavonic scripture is also a offical holiday of the city.

The sculpture is the work of Ventsislav Markov. The work is 230 cm high and is cast from bronze. The author was born in 1984 in Varna and has been connected with the "White City" for years.

The National Holiday of Bulgaria May 24 will be commemorated with celebrations and official ceremonies throughout the country from morning until evening today. The biggest procession will take place in Sofia and will include President Rumen Radev, ministers, MPs, cultural figures and public figures, students and teachers, as well as many citizens and guests of the city.
