Süleyman Demirel, in memoriam

Three days ago, Süleyman Demirel, a guru of Turkish politics, died at the age of 90.  From 1965, when he was first elected as prime minister, to 2000, when he retired as president, he was the towering figure of what was once ?the center right.? With his death, those of us who still remember the 20th century better realized that it is now a fully bygone age.

The passing away of Turkey?s 9th president Süleyman Demirel marks the end of an era in Turkish politics. Demirel was the last of those politicians who made their way up through the close-circuit of Turkey?s fledgling parliamentary system, amid the pains of transition from a rural to an urban society and as macro politics was dominated by the Cold War.

Former Turkish President, PM Demirel Dies at 90

Former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel died early on Wednesday morning at the age of 90.

Demirel was treated for a respiratory tract infection at the Guven Hospital in Ankara, the BBC reports.

Demirel served as the ninth President of Turkey between 1993 and 2000, had several terms as prime minister and his government was twice deposed by the military.
