Migrants try to board commercial boats from Rhodes

Hundreds of homeless undocumented refugees and migrants staying on the streets of Rhodes Island, Dodecanese tried to board commercial boats to Piraeus port on Sunday morning. Police and coastguard officials blocked their way. 

According to state media ERT, the refugees and migrants returned to the streets after seeing the heavy blockage from the police.

A distress signal from the port

What happened on Tuesday night at the port of Piraeus, where a man was thrown into the sea by the crew of a ferry, shows that drastic changes are urgently needed in maritime transport. 

It is worrying that this particular incident happened on a ferry owned by a large company in the country's largest port. 

Significant surge in summer passenger traffic at Greek ports in 2023

Passenger traffic at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio saw a notable 8.59 percent increase compared to the previous year during this year's summer months. 

Specifically, from June 1 to August 31, a total of 5,613,856 passengers were transported, surpassing the 5,169,646 passengers transported during the same period in 2022. 

Woman seriously injured after being hit by car

A woman was seriously injured on Thursday afternoon when a car moving at high speed hit her while she was waiting to cross the street in southern Athens.

The incident took place outside the Metropolitan Hospital in Neo Faliro when the driver, while travelling from Piraeus towards Glyfada, lost control of his vehicle, crossed in the opposite direction and hit the woman.
