The trial of a former branch manager of private lender Denizbank, accused of orchestrating a pyramid scheme that allegedly swindled renowned football stars, including Arda Turan and Fernando Muslera, entered its second hearing at an Istanbul court on Jan. 12.

In a widely covered case in which numerous Turkish football stars were allegedly defrauded, some of the victims have filed a criminal complaint against the bank accused of delaying reporting the location of the main suspect, the bank manager, to the authorities in order to persuade her to testify in favor of the institution.

A high-profile case involving a banker accused of defrauding prominent footballers and business figures has taken a dramatic twist with her alleging that high-ranking private lender DenizBank executives were not only aware of the fraudulent activities but also pressured her to testify otherwise.

Kalyon Enerji, the developer of the largest solar facility in Turkey, on Nov. 30 signed a $812 million loan agreement with six Turkish banks, U.S. lender JPMorgan Chase & Co and U.K. Export Finance (UKEF).

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided a $100 million fund for Denizbank to support companies' investments in green technologies and women-led businesses in Turkey amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The loan with a long-term maturity of up to seven years will help to build the resilience of the Turkish economy, the EBRD said in a statement on Feb. 19.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on Jan. 14 said it has hiked its financial support to Turkey amid its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Bank stepped up its financing in Turkey to €1.7 billion ($2 billion) in 2020 through 33 projects, from €1 billion in 35 projects in 2019," it said in a statement.

Ratings agency Moody's has said it has upgraded the long-term foreign currency deposit ratings of 12 Turkish banks.

Turkey's Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) on June 28 approved the purchase of private lender Denizbank by the Emirates NBD Bank PJSC (ENBD) of United Arab Emirates. 

Emirates NBD, Dubai’s largest bank, said on Jan. 30 that it had started initial strategic discussions with Russia’s Sberbank about a possible purchase of Sberbank’s stake in Turkey’s Denizbank.
