Fire breaks out in scrap metal recycling yard in Thessaloniki

A fire broke out under undetermined conditions at a scrap metal recycling yard in Diavata near the northern port city of Thessaloniki on Wednesday. 

Successive explosions are allegedly taking place, while fragments are reportedly being propelled into the surrounding area. 

Firefighting forces have been dispatched to the scene, and traffic regulations have been implemented.

Polluters of Diavata fields charged with violating environmental protection laws

Police have identified a husband and wife, aged 70 and 65, who dumped waste in fields in the area of Diavata in Thessaloniki and charged them with violating environmental protection laws.

The 65-year-old owns a company that specializes in emptying and cleaning cesspools and unblocking blocking hydraulic installations.

Police operation under way at Diavata migrant camp following brawl

A police operation was launched on Friday to crack down on potential criminal elements at the Diavata migrant reception center on the outskirts of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

The operation was organized following a brawl at the camp on Thursday night in which four Afghan nationals were injured.

Woman killed in train-car collision near Diavata, northern Greece

A pregnant woman was killed when a train collided with a car on the section of the intercity railway network near Diavata, in northern Greece, shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday, a local news website reported.
The train had been conducting the Alexandroupoli-Thessaloniki service when the collision occured. 

Migrants arrested in Diavata say they were misled by social media

Three men who were arrested during clashes between migrants who wanted to head for Northern and Western Europe and police on Saturday near the Diavata reception center in northern Greece told a court in Thessaloniki on Monday they were misled, along with hundreds of others, by a message spread on social media that the border was about to open.
