Conservative opposition chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Friday he expects the next general election to take place by May 2019.

Athens plans to declare an exclusive economic zone around the small island of Kastelorizo just one mile off the Turkish coast, Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said on Dec. 19.

Former Independent Greeks (ANEL) MP Dimitris Kammenos said Monday he plans to join an alliance with other nationalist politicians in a bid to "fill the vacuum" on the right end of Greece's ideological spectrum.

Kammenos, who is also head of the Greece's junior coalition partner, attended an international forum on security and migration.

Greece and Russia's defense ministers discussed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' planned official visit to the country on December 7 and security in the Mediteranmean, the Middle East and the Balkans during a meeting in Moscow, the ministry said.

Greek former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has claimed that US-Hungarian billionaire financier George Soros had asked for him to be ejected from the leftist-led government.

In comments to Skai television, Varoufakis claimed that Soros called Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in July 2015 and asked for his dismissal from the cabinet.

Conservative New Democracy has asked Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou to investigate claims that Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said certain ministers have been funded by Hungarian-American billionaire financier George Soros. 

The main opposition on Thursday called on judicial authorities to investigate allegations on possible crimes allegedly mentioned in a yet unpublished nine-page resignation letter submitted by former foreign minister Nikos Kotzias to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last week.
