Greece's conservative opposition party has called an emergency meeting in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires, east of Athens, which have so far claimed 80 lives.

The meeting will be held at 2.30 on Wednesday.

In the first quarter of this year, 53 Chinese people have been the victims of various disasters. This was announced by the Ministry of Civil Administration of the Professional Regulation Commission - PRC.

Total economic losses from natural and man-made disasters have soared by 63 percent to strike an estimated $306 billion in 2017, reinsurance firm Swiss Re said on Dec. 20.

In one of the institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, a Bulgarian team developing projects, together with scientists from 9 other European institutions, those for protection against terrorist attacks with weapons of mass destruction, industrial accidents and disasters, reports BNT. 

A new plan being put forward by the European Commission for managing natural disasters like the deadly flash floods that hit western Attica last week contains significant incentives for European Union member-states to strengthen their prevention and management systems.

Natural disasters are the new threat to humanity. Their number has increased dramatically in the last 50 years, so the number of people injured and killed has grown enormously. This year is another proof of the problem.

It's not just Greece that's prone to summer fires, as weather and human factors lead to similar disasters in countries across Southern Europe every year.

However, if we want to reduce the risk of fires, measures must be enforced, while we also need the appropriate means and coordination to act fast when a fire starts so it's less likely homes and lives will be put in danger.

The EU budget will pay more money to countries which have suffered from natural disasters. The agreement was reached at the permanent representatives-level in Brussels.
