The economic cost of climate-related disasters hit $2.25 trillion over the last two decades, an increase of more than 150 percent compared to the previous 20 years, the UN said Wednesday, reports AFP. 

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) noted that "climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events" such as floods and storms.

TOKYO (AP) — More than 300 people died in July from weather-related disasters in one of Japan's deadliest months in recent years.

Greece's conservative opposition party has called an emergency meeting in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires, east of Athens, which have so far claimed 80 lives.

In the first quarter of this year, 53 Chinese people have been the victims of various disasters. This was announced by the Ministry of Civil Administration of the Professional Regulation Commission - PRC.

Total economic losses from natural and man-made disasters have soared by 63 percent to strike an estimated $306 billion in 2017, reinsurance firm Swiss Re said on Dec. 20.
