‘Çanakkale is impassable’

A battle with only bayonets. Maybe 30 steps far away from the enemy. No rifles, no artillery, no proper arms. Turkey marks centenary of Atatürk's arrival in Ankara

Turkey on Dec. 27 commemorated the centenary of the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, in the capital Ankara.

The commemoration events started at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Atatürk, with the attendance of top officials. Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin laid a wreath on Atatürk's tomb.

How the Turkish Republic was established

"Gentlemen! We shall declare the republic tomorrow" is what modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said on the night of Oct. 28, 1923 as he addressed lawmakers and his close brothers-in-arms.
