Huge Earthquake Topples Buildings, Killing Nearly 250

A strong earthquake has struck central Mexico, killing at least 248 people and toppling dozens of buildings in the capital, Mexico City, reported BBC.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said more than 20 children had died and 30 were missing after a school collapsed.

The 7.1 magnitude quake also caused major damage in neighbouring states.

At least 224 killed by earthquake in Mexico

At least 226 people were killed by a powerful earthquake that struck central Mexico on Sept. 19, the nation's civil protection agency said.

The death toll in Mexico City surged to 117 people, Luis Felipe Puente, the head of the agency, wrote in a post on Twitter. 

The earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of a temblor that killed thousands in the capital. 

7.1 magnitude rocks Mexico (video)

A powerful earthquake has jolted Mexico City – measuring magnitude 7.1 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) – causing buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.
The extent of damage or injuries was not immediately clear, but people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue.

A Powerful Earthquake in Chile

A 5.9-magnitude quake was recorded in the coastal areas of Chile, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center reported.

According to them, the epicenter of the earthquake was 218 km northwest of Santiago, the Chilean capital. The earthquake was at a depth of 10 km.

Earthquake of 4 on the Richter Scale in Turkey

An earthquake of magnitude 4 on the Richter scale is registered today in Eastern Turkey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center reported, quoted by bTV. 

According to local media quoted by the seismological Kandilli Observatory in Istanbul, the quake is 4.3 on the Richter scale.

It is registered at 12:41 am and its epicenter is in the Erdzhish Yancuttepe area.
