Orthodox Serbs mark Good Friday

BELGRADE -- Believers of the Serb Orthodox Church are today marking Good (Great) Friday, ahead of the greatest Christian holiday, Easter, they will celebrate on Sunday.

In his Easter message, SPC Patriarch Irinej and bishops wished all believers "faith, hope, love and eternal life."

BELGRADE - Patriarch Irinej and bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church wished all believers who celebrate the biggest Christian holiday, Easter, according to the Julian calendar that it may bring them faith, hope, love and eternal life.

Museums, monuments and archeological sites will have different opening times over the Easter period. Specifically, the opening times announced are:

Good Friday, April 10: noon to 5 p.m.
Holy Saturday, April 11: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Easter Sunday, April 12: Closed
Easter Monday, April 13: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Thursday before the Holy Easter, known as the Maundy Thursday or Joimari, is the day when according to the popular traditions, the graves open and the spirits of the dead return home.

The Culture Ministry on Wednesday published the opening times for museum and archaeological sites over the Orthodox Easter weekend.

They will open at noon on Good Friday and close at 5 p.m.

On Easter Saturday, they will open at 8 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. but will be closed throughout the day on Eastern Sunday.

Easter Week is underway in predominately Orthodox Christian Greece, replete with solemn different liturgies for every day of the week leading up to Easter Sunday – the biggest date on the ecclesiastical calendar.

"Nisan" is the word for the month of April in the Turkish language, which is the equivalent of the month of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar. The word has its roots in old Babylonian Assyrian Aramaic language, which is an ancestor of both Arabic and Hebrew. April is about renewal, about the new tastes of the spring, be it eggs or milk, or greens or lamb; it is all about what spring stands for.
