Ebola virus epidemic in Sierra Leone

Police in Congo have detained the former minister of health amid an investigation into the use of Ebola funds as confirmed Ebola deaths rose to near 2,000 and confirmed cases of the virus exceeded 3,000 in the sprawling African nation.

More than 1,000 people have died in an epidemic of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Agency refers to a statement from the DR Congo Health Ministry. According to it, 1008 people died of the virus, and the reported cases of disease were 1529.

DR Congo on Tuesday officially declared the end of an outbreak of Ebola, bringing the curtain down on a 10-week re-emergence of the disease which claimed 33 lives.

Sierra Leone’s president has appealed for urgent help to support the thousands of people affected by a devastating mudslide on the outskirts of the country’s capital.

A mysterious illness with Ebola-like symptoms which appeared in southeast Liberia is now in the country's capital, local authorities say. Both the government and the World Health Organization (WHO) put the revised death toll from the illness at 12.

A health worker who was the first person diagnosed with Ebola in Britain arrived at a London hospital from Scotland early on Tuesday for treatment after contracting the disease in West Africa.
   
The woman arrived at the capital's Royal Free hospital, Britain's designated Ebola treatment centre, in an ambulance accompanied by several police vehicles, a Reuters witness said.
