Fire west of Athens guts homes, sends smoke over Acropolis
Firefighters intensified water drops using planes and helicopters before nightfall on May 20 after a wildfire west of Athens forced hundreds to flee their homes and sent a huge cloud of smoke and ash over the capital, obscuring the view of the Acropolis.
Turkey stands out in combating forest fires, data shows
Turkey was the most successful country in combatting forest fires in 2020 with an area of 6.2 hectares per fire, according to the European Forest Fire Information System data.
The area per fire in the U.S. was 68 hectares, and in Spain, it was 20.4 hectares, while this figure remained around 6.2 hectares in Turkey.
Halkidiki fire brought under partial control
A wildfire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon in a forested area of Sithonia, one of the three peninsulas of Halkidiki, northern Greece, was brought under partial control a few hours later, the fire service said.
A 30-strong team of firefighters with 11 vehicles is in the area of Pigadakia since the start of the blaze.

In some parts of New South Wales, there were even floods, and locals said it hadn't happened in several years.
