Villages evacuated as fire burns Greek island nature reserve
Hundreds of firefighters battled three wildfires in Greece, where two villages were being evacuated Tuesday as the largest blaze burned a thickly forested nature reserve on the island of Evia north of Athens.
Blaze burning grassland in Marathonas
A large wildfire was burning low grassland in the area of Marathonas, eastern Attica on Saturday, though no residencies were at risk.
The fire service has deployed a total of 146 firemen with 47 vehicles who were assisted by seven water-dropping aircraft and three helicopters.

Mural project brings joy to Mati
It was a summer afternoon when we took a ferry to return from the island of Andros to the port of Rafina last year. On the way back in the car we noticed what we thought was a beautiful sunset. However, after turning on the news, we realized that "the beautiful sunset" was actually a wildfire happening in Mati, close to the port of Rafina.

Med at serious risk from fires, WWF report warns
Fires have eaten through roughly 0.6 percent of Europe's Mediterranean forests each year from 2009 to 2018, a recent report from six country offices of global conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has shown, warning that fires are increasing in frequency and virulence.

Half of blazes due to arson, fire service figures show
Amid a spate of arson arrests in recent weeks when high temperatures and strong winds conspired to fan several large wildfires across the country, statistics acquired by Kathimerini indicate that at least half of all blazes last year were started intentionally.
Fire breaks out in East Mani
The fire department on Monday was battling a wildfire in the settlement of Marathea in East Mani in the Peloponnese, reports said.
Twenty-four firefighters in 12 trucks, one ground unit and one water-dumping airplane have been dispatched to contain the blaze, according to the same reports.
