WWF warns of worsening ‘superfires’ across Europe
Global conservation group World Wildlife Fund (WWF) warned on Thursday of the risks from new faster-spreading "superfires" in the wake of heatwaves and droughts that have been afflicting Europe in what many see as a symptom of climate change.

Firefighters battling blaze in central Evia
A wildfire was sweeping through brush and forest land in central Evia on Thursday, prompting authorities to evacuate a small village in the area as a precaution.
Residents of Makrychori, near the town of Kymi, were asked to leave their homes amid fears that strong winds blowing in the area could shift the direction of the blaze and put them at risk.

West Attica fire put out, Megara mayor says
A wildfire that broke out on Friday near western Attica's Megara has been extinguished, the town's mayor has said.
Speaking on One TV, Mayor Costas Fylaktos praised the country's fire service for its immediate response to the blaze, which started in an in accessible area of woodland on the outskirts of Megara, and said that the damage is limited.

Man faces arson charges over Tsameika fire
A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a wildfire that broke out on Monday in the area of Tsameika, near the port city of Patra in the western Peloponnese.
The man is facing charges of arson by negligence as he reportedly started the blaze accidentally while carrying out farm work, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency reported on Tuesday.

WWF Hellas warns of failings after Mati disaster
A smiling boy is depicted in a mural at the 1st Primary School of Rafina, in a photograph released Thursday. The mural is dedicated to the 103 people who died in disastrous wildfires that ravaged Mati and other parts of eastern Attica last July. In a statement Thursday, conservation group WWF Hellas pointed to dangerous shortfalls in the country's forest fire protection system.

Cyprus helps fight Israel fires
Two planes flew to Israel on Friday to join fire fighters who are battling numerous raging fires in a declared emergency.
According to local media, two fire-fighting airplanes from the Forestry Department flew to Israel to help battle wildfires in the country.

Greece not part of EU program for tackling fires
The European Commission on Tuesday inaugurated its first fleet of firefighting aircraft under a new program dubbed rescEU aimed at enlisting the help of member-states to respond to wildfires and other natural disasters without the participation of Greece.
