During a visit to Athens on Friday Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and Greek leaders called for closer dialogue between the South and North of Europe to resolve cross-border issues on the basis of common values.

RIGA - Latvia will try to ensure that some chapters in Serbia's EU accession talks are opened during its EU Presidency, starting on January 1, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said Wednesday after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dacic.

Dacic met in Riga with Latvia's Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, Parliament Speaker Inara Murniece and the foreign minister.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics has become the first high-ranking politician in his country and the Baltic states to come out publicly as being gay, in a series of tweets.
      
"I proudly announce I am gay... Good luck all of you," he said late Thursday in a tweet that has since gone viral.
