The much-awaited Kakava festivities have begun in the northwestern province of Edirne, as visitors throng the region to soak in the exuberant atmosphere full of activities such as dancing around the Kakava bonfire marking the arrival of spring, listening to folktales and firewalking.
Air quality in Thrace degrading: Academic
The air quality in the Thrace region is degrading, with the northwestern province of Edirne facing the highest risk, an academic has warned.
"Edirne has the most polluted air, but the air pollution in the provinces of Tekirdağ and Kırklareli are high, too," Gamze Varol from Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University told the Demirören News Agency.

Underground parts of Ottoman palace to be detected

Ancient artifacts throw light on history in northwestern Turkey
Artifacts from the ancient civilizations of Thrace, Persia, Macedonia, Rome and Byzantium, unearthed in northwestern Turkey, are a must-see for museumgoers in the area.

Leading roads are closed due to large floods in the northwest Turkish district of Edirne, Turkish TV NTV reported.
Due to the heavy rains flooded are the ground floors of houses, blocks and offices in the city of Edirne. The emergency room of a private hospital in the city is also flooded.
