Two protesters killed on anniversary of Egypt uprising as tension grows

Two protesters were killed in Egypt and a bomb wounded two policemen on Jan. 25, the anniversary of the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, security sources said.
   
The anniversary is a test of whether Islamists and liberal activists facing one of Egypt's toughest security crackdowns have the resolve to challenge the U.S.-backed government once again.

An "Islamist" protester was killed in clashes with police in Egypt's second city Alexandria on Jan. 25, officials said, as the country marked the fraught anniversary of its 2011 popular uprising.
      
Police officials said the protester shot at police during an Islamist demonstration. Police returned fire and killed him, they said.

Canadian FM, in Egypt, presses for journalist's release

Canadian foreign minister John Baird said he had a "fruitful" meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Thursday to seek the release of a Canadian journalist imprisoned with two Al-Jazeera colleagues.
      
But Baird played down expectations that his visit could see Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy freed imminently after more than a year in jail.
      

Egypt considers gas imports from Israel: minister

Egypt is open to importing gas from Israel, its oil minister said in state-owned media Jan. 14, another sign that it may lean on its neighbor to help tackle its energy troubles.

Egypt is going through its worst energy crisis in decades and is seeking fresh sources of natural gas, which powers most of its homes and factories, including Algeria, Russia, and Cyprus.

Egypt sets parliamentary poll dates as Sisi cements grip

Egypt said Jan. 8 it is to hold parliamentary elections from March 21 but analysts said the new legislature will offer no meaningful opposition to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's iron-fisted rule.
      
The elections, which will be held in phases culminating on May 7, will be the first since Sisi overthrew his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013.
