Eiffel Tower closed as staff go on strike

The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's top tourist attractions, was closed on Dec. 27 after staff went on strike, the landmark's operator said.

The one-day stoppage on the 100th anniversary of the death of engineer Gustave Eiffel, who built the tower, was to protest against "the current way it is managed," the hard-left CGT union said in a statement.

To experience Paris up close and personal, plunge into a public pool

PARIS - I slip into the water and push off quickly before the man swimming like a breast-stroking porpoise gets any closer. Paulin, 27, moved along the slackline suspended 70 meters above the ground, at one point sitting and lying on the rope before arriving at the Chaillot Theatre at the end of the half-hour performance.

Tokyo Olympics Come to End

The seemingly endless sprawl of Tokyo can be hard to take in from the ground. But sky-high observation decks dotted across the Japanese capital offer a fresh perspective.

Among the most popular are the two decks at the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest structure in Japan, which attracted an average of 4.5 million visitors a year before the pandemic.

Eiffel Tower Will Be Open for Visitors as of July 16

Visitor numbers will be limited to 10,000 a day to meet social distancing requirements, fewer than half of their pre-Covid levels, operator Sete told AFP.
