Elections in Turkey

Türkiye will be at a crossroads on May 14 when the millions of voters will cast their votes to elect the president and the Parliament, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said, adding everyone in the region and in the world is focused on the Turkish elections.

Representatives of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on March 21 applied to the Supreme Election Board (YSK) for the candidacy of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Supreme Election Board (YSK) has announced that ballot boxes will be established in 15 more countries in the elections to be held on May 14, YSK President Ahmet Yener has announced.

YSK decided to set up ballot boxes in 21 overseas representations in 15 countries, in which Turkish citizens did not cast vote in previous polls.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reiterated that 85 million Turkish people will together build the Century of Türkiye as the country is marking the centennial of its foundation while struggling for the recovery of millions of people affected by the most devastating disaster of the world.

With nearly two months to go to the polls, the political parties have started to receive applications for those who want to run for the 600-seat parliament.

''As the People's Alliance, we will write the epic of May 14 together with those who have joined us and the friends who will join us," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on March 11 via videoconference at the AKP Provincial Heads Meeting.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has confirmed that he will pay a visit to the Peoples' Democracy Party (HDP) to ask for support for his presidential bid in the next elections.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his main political ally, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, had a meeting on March 8, two days before the former is set to disclose the election date.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu reiterated his readiness to run in the next presidential elections as the candidate of the Nation's Alliance if the opposition agrees on his name.

"If there is an agreement on my name, I have no right to object," Kılıçdaroğlu said in an interview with FOX TV on Feb. 3.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Jan. 22 that he will make a formal call for elections on March 10 and again underlined May 14 as the date for the country's next parliamentary and presidential elections.
