Bulgarian President Urged to Veto Voting Changes

Several hundred Bulgarians protested on Tuesday in Sofia, shouting "Resign" and "Mafia" and throwing eggs at parliament, as MPs voted on controversial changes to the electoral law.

The demonstration ended with clashes between police and a small group of protesters and the detention of one citizen, accused of hooliganism.

Commission to parties: Don't expect us to recount ballots

The deputy president of the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) said on Tuesday that the commission should not be expected to recount the election.

However, Miladin Kovacevic noted that "all parties can carry out controls" when it comes to the ballots cast in Sunday's early parliamentary vote in Serbia.

RIK: Voter turnout 47.68 percent at 6 pm

BELGRADE - The voter turnout in Sunday's elections in Serbia was 47.68 percent at 6 pm, the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) announced.

The director of the national statistical office Miladin Kovacevic said that 47.44 percent of registered voters in central Serbia have voted by 6 pm, as have 48.34 percent and 47.14 percent of voters in Vojvodina and Belgrade, respectively.

Election silence begins in Serbia

BELGRADE - Election silence, which will remain in place until the closure of polling stations at 8 pm Sunday, began at midnight in Serbia, banning political parties from engaging in pre-election activities.

From 7 am Sunday, when the polling stations open, Serbian citizens will elect the new national parliament and the Vojvodina provincial assembly, as well as most local assemblies.
