Seven Bulgarian regions, located in the northwest and west of the country, have been placed under a Code Yellow warning, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has said.

The regions affected include Vidin, Vratsa, Montana, Sofia, Sofia-region, Pernik, and Kyustendil.

The Bulgarian authorities have banned the traffic of trucks over 12 tonnes across the country with the exception of Burgas and Varna regions after more than 24 hours of snowfall, NovaTV reported on Sunday.

The ban doesn't only apply to the easternmost regions of Varna and Burgas where rain fell.

Depopulated towns in Bulgaria are 164 as of December 2014, as reported by the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The biggest number of locations with no inhabitants are in the municiplaities of Grabrovo, Veliko tarnovo and Kardzhali - respectively 61, 57 and 11.

The European route E-79 remained sealed off for hours on Monday as angry demonstrators voiced their anger at authorities' decision to hand out an MP seat to Aleksandar Metodiev from the DPS.

Metodiev, also known as "Bat Sali", will be among lawmakers representing the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) from the region of Kyustendil, a town in Bulgaria's south-west.

Code orange weather alert has been issued for four districts in northwestern Bulgaria for September 15 due to torrential rains.

The districts under code orange are Vidin, Montana, Vratsa and Sofia district, according to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Code yellow warning for torrential rains is issued for Friday in 9 regions in Bulgaria, said the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology.

The warning is for the regions of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Sofia-Region, Lovech, Gabrovo, Pazadzhik, Plovdiv and Stara Zagora. 

It will also rain, but less intensively, in the western and central parts of the country.

Code yellow warning for heavy rains was issued for 13 regions, said the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology. 

The warning includes the regions Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Lovech, Gabrovo, Pazadrzhik, Plovdiv, Stata Zagora, Sliven, Smolyan, Kurdzhali, Haskovo, Yambol.
