Man identified as retired military officer dies after shooting partner, self

Police in southern Athens on Thursday were investigating the death of a 70-year-old man who reportedly shot himself after trying to kill his partner.

The pair were rushed to the Asklipeio Hospital in the coastal suburb of Voula at around noon on Thursday with severe gunshot injuries, where doctors were unable to save the man.

The sputtering privatization of a prime piece of real estate that used to be home to Athens's international airport on the southern coast of the Greek capital is a "symbol of SYRIZA's failure in development," New Democracy opposition chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during a visit to the site on Tuesday.

Explosion at open-air car park rocks Glyfada

A powerful explosion at an open-air car park rocked the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada on Friday morning, with initial reports saying that one person has been injured.

Police and firefighters have been dispatched to 128 Vouliagmenis Avenue and have closed down a large section of the thoroughfare as they manage the incident.

No date set for the beginning of the Elliniko development project

The new, revised program for TAIPED privatizations, published on Friday, contains no references as to when the long-delayed development of the old Athens airport plot at Elliniko in southern Athens might finally start. The other major issue for the state sell-off fund is highway maintenance company Egnatia Odos SA, which is currently mired in red tape.

Elliniko casino edging closer

The government tabled an amendment in Parliament on Thursday that includes new clauses related to the operation framework of the country's casinos. The timing of the amendment is clearly related to the planned casino at Elliniko. The gaming watchdog also published new casino operation regulations.

Damaged trust

Every time that Greek government officials get the chance to speak to foreign investors, they unfortunately realize the extent of the damage caused by the coalition's foot-dragging and the occasional wars it declares on certain major - if not emblematic - investment projects that the country so desperately needs to get back on its feet.
