Ellinikon International Airport

Greek army specialists destroyed an unexploded World War II bomb on Thursday discovered during work on a massive urban development project at the old Ellinikon International Airport near Glyfada, a coastal area south of Athens.

The operating license of the Casino Company (EKAZ) for a wide range of activities in the Metropolitan Pole of Ellinikon - Agios Kosmas and the construction of a hotel, conference and exhibition center and a gathering place for sports or cultural events was signed today, June 8, 2022, by the Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras, as a representative of the Greek State, and the Athens IRC Conce

The Athens International airport of Eleftherios Venizelos is ranked 22nd among 30 EU airports with the highest passenger transport having a total 20 million passengers last year. The El. Venizelos recorded a 10.6% rise in passenger transport compared last year.

6,000 refugees and migrants are living in squalid conditions at the Hellinikon area in Attica, where the abandoned 2004 Olympic facilities are standing. Just a few meters from Poseidonos Avenue, running along the coast line of Attica, lies a modern day ‘Greek flavela’, with most people in the area completely oblivious of its existence.

The government has admitted its lack of plan for immigrants to Greece at a time when they are being carted back and forth from Idomeni to Athens without a plan. The mayors of four regions in Athens have joined their voices in an open letter against the government’s reported plan for a creation of a migrant camp at the former Elliniko airport.
