Emirates' announcement on Monday that it would start flying to the United States with a stop for passengers in Greece sparked a strong reaction from a lobby group representing US competitors who accused it of competing unfairly through state subsidies.

After a five-year absence, the year-round daily air link between Athens and the New York area is scheduled to resume as Dubai-based airline Emirates on Monday announced it will be starting flights on the route from March 12.

Dubai's Emirates said on Dec. 29 it has reached an agreement with Rolls-Royce over a "technical issue" relating to the engines of Airbus's A380 superjumbo, and confirmed receiving one plane this week.

The carrier also said it "will continue to receive deliveries of both A380s and (Boeing) 777s in 2017."

Emirates Airlines adds a second daily flight to Athens increasing its weekly flight to Athens to 14.

According to an announcement issued by the airline, the flight will be linked with the already existing itinerary Dubai-Larnaca offering the opportunity to passengers to make reservations between the Cyprus city of Larnaca and Athens.
