The time has come for the Greek government to develop a national health strategy. In fact, it's long overdue.

Government plans to introduce a special relocation bonus for the medical staff of military hospitals that will move to public hospitals to cover serious staff shortages. 

There is "no scenario in which" military hospitals could be integrated with the National Health System (ESY), Defense Ministry sources said on Sunday.

Responding to recent rumors and publications bringing up the possibility of military hospitals becoming part of ESY, the sources added that "the health services of the armed forces must be and will remain independent."

The expenditure on 200 expensive hospital drugs supplied by National Health System (ESY) hospitals shot up to 65 million euros in November, while it had been calculated - based on the needs of the previous months of the year - that it would not exceed €28 million euros.

The National Health System (ESY) suffers from serious staff shortages but it is not just the lack of decent salaries, but also the working conditions that are putting off doctors and nurses from working for public healthcare services.

Greece's National Healthcare System, or ESY, is in dire need of a comprehensive overhaul. The issue at hand goes beyond mere allocation of resources or recruitment. Without taking bold measures, all efforts will be futile and lead to a dead end.

A complete overhaul of the National Health System (ESY), an essential reform that all political forces acknowledge as a top priority, needs to be carried out in a way that accounts for the particularities of the country and each of its regions.

Doctors will walk off the job next Wednesday, June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a meeting at the Ministry of Health has been called by board of directors of the Athens-Piraeus Hospital Doctors Association (EINAP) at 1 p.m. on the day.
