The Cantonal Court in Zenica delivered a first-instance verdict on Friday acquitting Ivica Jukic, alias Juka, of mistreating Bosniak prisoners of war at the Silos Nova Trgovina detention facility in Zepce in August 1993.

Presiding judge Enes Malicbegovic said that some of the testimonies from witnesses who had allegedly been mistreated were either contradictory or too similar.

Izabela Kisic, executive director of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia, said there were "huge differences" in the punishments handed down against Serbian citizens convicted of joining Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and those who fought on the side of Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine.

The NGOs' joint letter also criticised the inaction of the international community and recalled the consequences of the 1990s war in Bosnia.

Simo Stupar's defence asked the Bosnian state court in Sarajevo on Wednesday to overturn the first-instance verdict sentencing him to 12 years in prison for crimes against humanity in Vlasenica in 1992.

Defence lawyer Vesna Tupajic-Skiljevic urged the court to either acquit Stupar or quash the judgment and order a new trial, while the prosecution called for the verdict to be upheld.

The Serbian Orthodox Church, the most loyal ally of modern Serbian chauvinism in the Balkans, began celebrations on the 700th anniversary of the death of King Stefan II Milutin (1282-29 October 1321) in RN Macedonia, but without inviting local scholars, a BGNES reporter reported.

The Bosnian state court in Sarajevo found ex-soldier Cvijan Tomanic guilty on Thursday of committing crimes against humanity in the Zvornik area during the Bosnian war in 1992, and sentenced him to seven years in prison.

He was convicted of participating in the murder of one person and of beating others.

Kosmac was garrisoned by heavily-armed Austrian troops until 1918, when the empire collapsed and the coastal strip of Montenegro was united with the post-World War One Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
