After two of its former leaders went to stand trial in The Hague, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK wants to revive its fortunes by choosing a new figurehead who can improve on its recent poor performance in elections.

"Next week I'll take the final constitutional steps to enable the formation of a new government with full legitimacy from parliament, capable of fighting COVID-19 and serving the people," the President tweeted. 

Members of civil society groups in Kosovo accused the security guards of the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, of pushing them away from the party building on Monday as they were protesting in a "March for Refusal", as they called it, over the new bill on financing political parties.

Kosovo's opposition Vetevendosje party may prove a strong contender in the municipal elections set for October 22, after the general elections this June showed a surprising spike in its popularity.

The coalition of three parties - the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, AAK, and the Initiative for Kosovo, NISMA, is being predicted to win the most votes in Sunday's elections, but not enough to establish an administration.

With opposition to the deal still strong - and a possible lack of MPs' votes to ratify the agreement on demarcation with Montenegro - Kosovo President Hashim Thaci on Wednesday urged the country's parliament and government to pass the deal so that Kosovo can meet the criteria needed for visa liberalization with the EU.
