The European Union must step up preparations for climate change risks, as a hotter planet threatens everything from farming to financial stability, the European Commission has said.

The Commission was responding to a stark report published on Monday by the European Environment Agency (EEA), which urged EU countries to prepare for "catastrophic" risks from worsening climate change.

The EEA, quoted by DPA and reported by BTA, highlighted the increasing dangers of extreme heat, forest fires, and severe floods, emphasizing that these perils are outpacing society's readiness to combat them.

Brussels – The European Environment Agency (EEA) has launched the city air quality viewer, which has taken data from two Slovenian cities, Ljubljana and Maribor. The latest data show that the Slovenian capital is plagued by poor air quality, whereas the situation is a bit better in Slovenia’s second largest city.

Every year, the European Environment Agency (EEA) compiles bathing water data gathered by local authorities across the 27 European Union member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Albania - measuring levels of bacteria from sewage and livestock. More than two thirds of sites are coastal beaches, with rivers and lakes making up the remainder.

Air pollution is slowly easing in EU countries but still causes nearly half a million early deaths each year, the European Environment Agency (EEA) said in its annual report published Monday, reports AFP. 

Although pollution levels dropped slightly in 2015, they remain far higher than standards set by both the European Union and the World Health Organization, the report said.
