Fylla Bridge on Evia reopens

The reconstructed Fylla Bridge on Evia, which was damaged by floods in 2020, reopened on Friday.

The bridge, located in the island's municipality of Halkidea and which passes over the Lilandas River, was destroyed by Storm Thalia, which wreaked havoc on Evia in early August 2020. 

‘Work From Greece’ visits destinations

Workfromgreece.gr, an initiative of Marketing Greece, carried out a series of actions over the last few weeks in Athens, Paros, Evia, Hania, Kalamata and Syros, with the aim of attracting the interest of digital nomads and remote workers to Greek destinations, as well as to hold a discussion with local tourism communities about the phenomenon of digital nomads.

Evia proves popular with subsidized tourism voucher recipients

Greece's employment agencies disbursed nearly 103,000 vouchers for accommodation in July, allowing people on incomes below €30,000 to enjoy a few days of subsidized vacation.

The most popular destinations were the island of Evia, where nearly 10% of the vouchers were used, followed by the Halkidiki peninsula, in the north, and the regional unit of Pieria, at the foot of Mt Olympus.

Grill owner arrested after alleged deliveryman dies of suspected heatstroke

A grill owner who was arrested after a man (46) who allegedly worked for him making deliveries died of suspected heatstroke has been released after appearing before a prosecutor.

Police in Halkida, on the island of Evia, had arrested the grill owner on suspicion of manslaughter as part of their investigation into the death of the 46 year old.

Two fishermen to stand trial over ex-minister’s death

Two fishermen will stand trial for the murder of former minister Sifis Valyrakis in January, 2021 in the sea off Eretria, according to a decision on Thursday by the Halkida plenary council on the island of Evia.

Valyrakis, a former minister and resistance fighter against Greece's 1967-74 military dictatorship, was found dead at sea by the coast guard.

Committee tables northern Evia’s 389.8-million-euro reconstruction plan

The committee tasked with creating a masterplan for the reconstruction of northern Evia, most of which was destroyed in a massive wildfire in August 2021, presented the project to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other local government officials during a meeting on Monday.
