Voter turnout hit an historic low in Sunday's election, with 47.18% of voters opting to stay away from the ballot box, the highest abstention rate since the fall of the military junta in 1974, if not before.

Mainland Greece is aging alarmingly - faster than even the most dire predictions of demographers. One in three residents of the Prefectures of Arta and Evrytania is currently over 65 years old, a percentage that was expected in 2050, while in eleven prefectures of the country with a total population of 828,000 people one in four is elderly.

The arrival of a storm system dubbed Penelope has brought gusty winds, intense rainfall and flooding in several parts of Greece.

So far, the weather system has mainly affected central regions and the Peloponnese, with the biggest problems recorded at the mountainous region of Agrafa, in the regional unit of Evrytania.

Leading Greek food company Jotis and nonprofit organization HOPEgenesis on Thursday announced a program aimed at boosting the birth rate in remote parts of Greece.

Karpenisi, its capital is one of the favourite tourist destinations for the lovers of winter sports and snow.
