Bulgarian Customs Seize 16 T of Cut Tobacco at Kulata Crossing

The Bulgarian customs have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16.2 tonnes of cut tobacco for smoking across the country's border with Greece and save BGN 2.5 M (EUR 1.27 M) in excise duty.

The tobacco had been discovered by customs officers in a Bulgarian-registered truck at Kulata crossing on the border with Greece, the National Customs Agency said in a statement on Monday.

Bulgaria Police, Customs Crack Down on Illegal Cigarettes Factory

An illegal cigarettes factory was found on Saturday in the town of Lukovit, Northern Bulgaria, police say.

In a specialized action conducted jointly by the Interior Ministry, the Customs Agency, and the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP), police discovered production and storage facilities, equipment, cigarette boxes, and around 13 tons of tobacco.

Bulgarian Customs Agency Collected BGN 8.1 B in Revenues in 2015

The Bulgarian customs agency collected a total of BGN 8.1 B in revenues in 2015, which was the largest amount collected in the past seven years.

This is revealed by the annual report of the agency published on Tuesday.

Among the main challenges of the customs agency in 2015 were the falling prices of oil on world markets, the migrant influx and the contraband of cigarettes.

Car excise duties could shoot up by 200 euros for large cars

New rules for excise duties for cars are turning into a headache for the Greek government due to the fact that there is no database for passenger cars to be taxed according to their merits. The government hopes to scrape 200 million euros from car owners in 2016, but this cannot be done until new excise duties are announced.

Bulgaria's Parliament to Discuss Increase in Excise Duty on Cigarettes

Bulgaria's parliamentary committee on budget and finance will discuss Thursday a proposed increase in the excise duty on cigarettes.

The measure is envisaged in a set of amendments to the Excise Duties and Tax Warehouses Act, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

As of 2016, the excise duty on cigarettes will start increasing, pushing up cigarette prices.
