Health minister calls on public to avoid complacency

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca has called on the public to avoid complacency and believing that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 causes a milder disease, urging everyone to get their booster shots.

"We are fighting a variant of the virus that spreads rapidly and causes a milder course of the disease. This should not be passed onto you as complacency," Koca said on Twitter.

Tough times in fight against virus ‘left behind’

Turkey's Health Minister Fahrettin Koca has said the difficult period in the fight against COVID-19 has been left behind and life will turn to normal soon, but stressed the current personal measures taken in protection against the virus will continue.

Noting that the pandemic was still on the agenda, Koca assured that "this will change in a short time."

First cases of Omicron variants detected in Turkey

Turkey has detected the first cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the country's health minister has said, calling on people to remain calm but vigilant.

"One of the [Omicron] cases was in Istanbul and the other five cases were in [the western province of] İzmir," Fahrettin Koca told lawmakers in parliament on Dec. 11 during discussions on the Health Ministry's 2022 budget.

Turkey detects first six cases of Omicron COVID-19 variant

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Dec. 11 that the first six cases of COVID-19's Omicron variant have been detected in Turkey.

"The symptoms are very mild," Koca said, adding that there was no hospitalization for these patients. The minister's remarks came during the budget talks in the parliament. 

Virus cases in schools not alarming, says education minister

The number of coronavirus cases reported in Turkey's schools is not at alarming levels, Education Minister Mahmut Özer has said, reiterating that all measures will be taken to ensure face-to-face education is maintained.

Schools will not close again even if the number of cases rise, Özer said in an interview on Sept. 30 on private broadcaster CNN Türk.
