Coast Guard vessel intercepts 22 migrants off Farmakonisi

A Hellenic Coast Guard vessel on Monday intercepted a smuggling boat carrying 22 undocumented migrants off the Aegean island of Farmakonisi.

The migrants, whose ethnic origin was unknown, were transferred to the nearby island of Leros where they were to be hosted at a reception center to undergo registration.

The migrants were said to be in good health. 
 

Greek islands receive more refugees

Greece's coast guard rescued 108 refugees and migrants in two separate operations in the eastern Aegean on Tuesday, as the number of arrivals continued to climb.

The first large plastic boat was located off the east coast of Lesvos, near the island airport, where coast guard officers rescued 64 people and arrested a 50-year-old boat operator believed to be the smuggler.

Turkish jet flies low over Greece's Farmakonisi island

A Turkish Air Force F-16 descended to 3,200 feet while passing over the southeastern Aegean island of Farmakonisi on Tuesday after entering the Athens Flight Information Region at 10.55 a.m.

On Monday, seven Turkish aircraft, four of which were armed, violated the Athens FIR on four separate occasions, the Greek military said, adding that they were chased off by Greek fighter jets.

Dozens intercepted at sea

A sailing boat with 73 refugees and migrants on board was intercepted by a coast guard vessel in the sea area between the Dodecanese islands of Leros and Leipsoi in the southeastern Aegean Tuesday.

According to reports, the boat was towed to Leros, while two men, an Italian and a Ukrainian, were arrested on people-smuggling charges.
