Migrants rescued by Greek coast guard in Aegean

Forty-eight migrants and refugees were rescued on Friday off the coast of the Farmakonisi islet in the eastern Aegean.

The migrants were crammed in an inflatable rubber dingy which started taking in water before the coast guard picked them up out of the sea.

All 48 were transferred to the nearby island of Leros.

Two new boat tragedies with 12 dead, including children, in the Aegean

A new migrant tragedy took place east of the small Greek Aegean island of Farmakonisi at dawn on Friday. Seven migrants, including six small children, lost their lives in the tragedy.

Greek Coast Guards confirmed that a wooden dinghy carrying migrants crashed into rocks resulting in one woman and six children meeting a tragic death.

The small boat went down off the Greek island of Farmakonisi overnight, sending 29 people into the water, an official with the Greek port police told AFP.

A total of 13 migrants, including seven children, were killed early on Dec. 9 after two separate boats capsized off Turkey's Aegean coast. The incidents come amid a new spate of deaths in the sea dividing Turkey and Greece, as the wave of migrants trying to reach Europe continues into the winter.

More migrant children swallowed by the Aegean off Farmakonisi

Twelve dead bodies were pulled from the sea in northeast Aegean, off the coast of the island of Farmakonisi, after their wooden dinghy capsized shortly after midnight. It is believed that there were 50 migrants on board the vessel, risking the unsafe journey to Europe. Among the dead are reportedly six children, four men and two women. A search is now on to find the other missing people.
