Farmers' market

A man leaves the farmers' market in the Peloponnesian town of Argos on Saturday. Business was slow at the weekly street market due to the wet weather and the coronavirus lockdown.

Development Minister Nikos Papathansis on Thursday announced plans to relieve congestion at neighborhood farmers' markets across the country - a mainstay for most Greek households - by breaking them up into smaller parts.

As the death toll from the new coronavirus rose to eight and the number of infections to 495 on Friday, the government announced fresh measures to protect the public from the rapidly spreading epidemic.

The beginning of autumn in Sofia will be marked with the fourth Farmer's Market - the Autumn season.

It will be held in the interval from 10.30 to 18.00 today behind the Alexander Nevski cathedral on Oborishte Street.

Funny, educational and very tasty - such will be the Children's Day for kids and their parents if they visit the specially organised organic products market. It will take place on June 1st in the Zaimov Park, next to the Sofia Theater. Over 40 organic producers will offer a variety of natural products grown in Bulgaria which were supported under the Rural Development Program (2014-2020).

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) will carry out extra inspections across the country ahead of Easter and St. George's Day holidays, said the Agency.

Specialised farmers' markets selling organic products will be opened in five Bulgarian cities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo.

Only certified producers will be able sell their produce at these markets, private bTV station informs.

In order to be eligible to sell at the markets, producers will have to possess certificates for each of the exhibited products.

The first Farmer Market Fest will take place in Sofia this Friday at the central entrance of Sofia's Zaimov park between 1 PM and 8 PM.

Besides the stalls with organic products, the festival will feature discussions on direct sales of farmer products, presentations, culinary demonstrations, food tastings and live music.

The Sofia City Council voted to turn the Rimskata Stena open air market into a farmers' market for organic production, reports Sega daily. 

The Council allowed the municipal company Markets East to spend up to BGN 20 000 for the preparation of an investment project for the renovation.
