Charges against police who used force on feminist dance ‘Las Tesis’ group dropped

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has dropped charges against police officers who used physical force on a group of women who performed the "Las Tesis" dance last year to draw attention to growing femicide in Turkey.

The prosecutors said "no crime or element of crime" had been found in their decision.

Man receives aggravated life sentence for murder of academic

An Ankara court on Feb. 21 reached a verdict in the high-profile case of the murder of 27-year-old research assistant Ceren Damar Şenel.

The 33rd Heavy Penal Court of Ankara convicted suspect Hasan İsmail Hikmet to an aggravated life sentence on charges of "deliberate killing." He was separately given two years in prison for "violating firearm laws" and "threatening with a gun."

A psychiatric examination report of the suspect Özgür Arduç, 36, said that his abilities of mental abstraction and evaluating the reality were normal.

Over 470 women killed in Turkey in 2019: Platform

At least 474 women were murdered in Turkey in 2019, according to an annual report by Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız Platformu (We Will Stop Femicides Platform), a women's rights organization that monitors violence against women.

The number of women killed increased in 2019 compared to the previous year, the platform, which keeps a tally of murders of women, said in the report.
