Strong rains, winds topple trees; shipping affected

The strong rains and winds across several parts of Greece felled trees and caused power outages.

Among the hardest hit areas were some of Athens' northern suburbs.

In the municipality of Filothei-Psychiko more than 40 trees were toppled and some streets remain closed to traffic, state broadcaster ERT reported.

Big housing project at Psychiko

The largest residential development project that has ever been carried out in the Municipality of Filothei-Psychiko in northern Athens is designed by businessman Yiannis Papalekas. Having recently acquired a series of properties in the area, and installed the offices of his companies in a building in Neo Psychiko, he has succeeded in purchasing the last large free space in the area.

The race for equality

When Zozo Christodoulou arrived at the Panathenaic Stadium one morning in 1974, the symbolic weight of what she was about to do had not yet dawned on her. "I didn't want to prove anything. I just wanted to run," she says. But she had already accomplished one first that day by being a Greek woman at the starting line of the Athens Marathon.
