Strong rains, winds topple trees; shipping affected
The strong rains and winds across several parts of Greece felled trees and caused power outages.
Among the hardest hit areas were some of Athens' northern suburbs.
In the municipality of Filothei-Psychiko more than 40 trees were toppled and some streets remain closed to traffic, state broadcaster ERT reported.
Big housing project at Psychiko
The largest residential development project that has ever been carried out in the Municipality of Filothei-Psychiko in northern Athens is designed by businessman Yiannis Papalekas. Having recently acquired a series of properties in the area, and installed the offices of his companies in a building in Neo Psychiko, he has succeeded in purchasing the last large free space in the area.

Police smash large drugs racket in Athens
A large drug cartel operating primarily in the Athens suburbs of Acharnes and Fyli has been unraveled by Attica police authorities.
Police said the cartel consisted of seven gangs that worked under the guidance of two criminal organizations.

More mosquito spraying in northern Athens this week
The Attica Regional Authority on Monday begins the third round of spraying against mosquitoes in northern parts of the Greek capital, starting with the leafy suburbs of Papagou, Holargos, Aghia Paraskevi and Halandri, and ending on Friday with Filothei, Psychico, Kifissia and Pefki, among others.

Ministry introduces new land use rules
The Environment Ministry has introduced new land use rules which allow municipalities to choose what sort of construction is allowed, or not allowed, as part of its town planning.
The changes were announced on Monday in a presidential decree which replaced the land use framework established in 1987.

An all-women showdown
The 19th Filothei Women Gala got under way on Wednesday in the northern suburb of Athens. The women-only international track and field competition draws athletes from Greece and abroad. Christmas Tree Lighting | Athens | December 9
The Municipality of Filothei-Psychico will switch on the Christmas tree lights in Vassileos Georgiou Square on Saturday, December 9, when there will also be a street party in support of Make-a-Wish Greece. The event, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m., will feature music by Yiannis Savidakis and the choral ensembles of the local conservatory.

The race for equality
When Zozo Christodoulou arrived at the Panathenaic Stadium one morning in 1974, the symbolic weight of what she was about to do had not yet dawned on her. "I didn't want to prove anything. I just wanted to run," she says. But she had already accomplished one first that day by being a Greek woman at the starting line of the Athens Marathon.
