People who cause wildfires deliberately or through gross negligence will face stiffer fines and prison sentences under a legal amendment being prepared by the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry, Vassilis Kikilias has said.

Unfortunately, this summer has again confirmed that fires are a permanent and constant challenge, while experts warn that the worst is yet to come in terms of the frequency and destructiveness of natural disasters.

Strengthening the firefighting force is certainly indicated, but experience has shown us that it is not enough. 

The situation on Rhodes is very difficult according to the Hellenic Fire Service spokesperson Giannis Artopios, who noted that the fire is burning in a very dense forest with a large amount of biomass. The winds, that have been strengthened, and the difficult weather conditions make this an active fire, he warned.

The cause is not yet known.

A fire has broken out on Monday at the church of St. George in the Old Fort of Corfu. The fire is currently burning through the roof of the church and no injuries have been announced.
