Firefighters contain destructive wildfire near Athens

Firefighters on Wednesday contained a wildfire burning for nearly four days near Athens after it destroyed thousands of hectares of pine forest and dozens of homes.

The fire broke out on Sunday in Kalamos, a coastal holiday spot some 45 km (30 miles) northeast of the capital, and spread quickly to three more towns, stoked by strong and changing winds.

The blaze broke out at 10.30am today at London Southend Airport's perimeter, according to Daily Star. 

An airport spokesperson said an Air Livery hangar had gone up in smoke.

Aviation feed Airlive tweeted that it an "explosion" had happened.

Peter Gettings was waiting to board a flight when he noticed the flames.

The fire in Barnabas, on the forest fire that started from Kalamos on Sunday afternoon, was rampant, and it quickly became too large for many to complain that there was mismanagement of the situation.

Shortly after 10:45, there was a great resurgence in the mountain with firefighters using bulldozers in order to open up roads to get close to the flames and try to limit the front.

Firefighters battle large blaze near Grammatiko, partially contain another in Zakynthos

A large fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon near Grammatriko, northeast of Athens, continued to burn on Monday, testing the efforts of firefighters who resumed their efforts to extinguish it in the early hours. 

The fire was close to residential areas in Grammatiko and neighboring Kalamos and Varnavas, eastern Attica.

Extremely difficult is the night in Kalamos, as the big fire rages unchecked, burning a dense pine forest in the houses scattered around the area.

The mayor of Oropos urged the inhabitants of the Agioi Apostoloi to evacuate the area immediately.
