ENI-TOTAL gas drilling in Cyprus’ EEZ seen as deterrent against Ankara

With Turkey pushing the envelope in the Southeastern Mediterranean and specifically in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Nicosia hopes that Ankara's bellicose actions may be best addressed by business factors.

It is hoped that the interests of energy giants which will be drilling there may act as a deterrent.

Greece and Cyprus have responded with calm and caution to the tension being stirred up in the Eastern Mediterranean by a Turkey that feels isolated. At the same time, they are taking advantage of regional cooperation schemes and international alliances that have cross-party and long-term support domestically, and are therefore likely to remain unchanged.

The escalation of Turkish maneuvering in the Eastern Mediterranean, most recently exemplified by Ankara's intention to drill for natural gas within Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ), should come as no surprise.

Israeli ambassador expresses support for Cyprus' EEZ rights

The Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus Sammy Revel has expressed its support for Nicosia following Turkey's decision to begin drilling operations within Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

"Israel is following with serious concern recent steps taken by Turkey in Cyprus EEZ, off its western coast," Revel wrote on Twitter.

In response to Turkey's plans to conduct drilling operations within Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) off its western coast, the European Union has expressed its "grave concern" pledging to "respond appropriately and and in full solidarity" with the East Mediterranean nation.
