When journalism lacks a modicum of common sense, and fails miserably to do the most basic of research then the outcome is bound to be disastrous and in some cases quite damaging for the reputation of people.

While stoning is commonly believed to be the penalty for adultery in Islam, flogging was far more readily used following convictions for marital infidelity In "The Big Wedding," one of the two main characters in the Turkish shadow play Karagöz is getting married.

Saudi blogger Raef Badawi was flogged in public Jan. 9 near a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, receiving 50 lashes for "insulting Islam", witnesses said.
      
In September, a Saudi court upheld a sentence of 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for Badawi, and he is expected to have 20 weekly whipping sessions until his punishment is complete.
